Unofficial Moniker Silent Auction Results for T.R.A.F.F.I.C West 2008
Thanks go to Namepros member ABCProductions for posting these on the forum. The figures at the time of this post put the silent auction sales total of 270 domains at roughly $475,000. These results are much lower than the last T.R.AF.F.I.C. silent domain auction this past October which had 487 sales with two sales over $250,000 and twelve over $25,000.

While dollar results may be lower for this auction, it is hard to measure results on this basis alone. So many factors exist to determine measurable results for auctions. The quality and value of the domains offered at each auction can be perceived differently by each one of us, thus determining whether we join the bidding or not. I think that the affiliate auction has some awesome domains, but I am not sure how the affiliate industry as a whole percieves the value of domain ownership as it helps to bring customers to your door compared to just owning their company domain, and branding it.
To be really frank, I think that there are alot of people that STILL don’t get it. While the change is in the air, many of us are reluctant to set reserves low and risk a mediocre auction turnout. Many are patiently waiting for critical mass.
If you submit domains to Moniker’s auctions, you set your reserves not knowing if you are going to be in the live or the silent auction and that can really make a difference. While I may not have a problem setting a lower reserve in the live Traffic auction, knowing that it get’s plenty of attention, I won’t know for months if it will get into the live or go into the silent. Certainly in the silent you don’t want your reserve too low - especially in auctions outside Traffic. Look at Macau, where the time difference played a huge factor.
Also, if the domains are not being marketed to the right audience than that is another factor. I consider my domains real estate and I want them marketed like I would want my home to be marketed if I put it up for sale. I want my domains “out there” for people to see BEFORE the sale. How many people list there home for 3 days before it get’s sold?
I would appreciate it if my sales rep. and listing company would approach the appropriate buyers for my domains, and send press releases to the targeted market. They earn a commission, so isn’t that what they should be doing?
There are so many reasons why sales could be better than they are. I think that at live auctions there is room on the screen to put one or two relevant sentences about the domain. You could highlight any statistics not in the catalogue (and I use the term catalogue loosely), or information about breaking news that is relevant to the domain, or if the keywords rank on Google Trends etc..
Let’s all work together on getting the news out on domains to business, social and media contacts that we have access to in our own lives and let’ see if we can reach critical mass sooner.
